Motion, Stillness and the Spine
This will be a series of four sessions covering different aspects of somatics and yoga with particular emphasis on the spine as part of the British Wheel of Yoga – All Wales Gathering.
A Somatic Approach to Asana Practice:
In this session we will explore how to use Somatic Movement Techniques and Principles to enhance an asana practice with a particular emphasis on the spine. By using some traditional Yoga Asanas we will show how Somatic Movement Sequences and/or Somatic Principles can help increase range of movement and find more ease within the asanas.
Developmental Movement revisits the way in which we moved as children, It helps give our movement a more dynamic and organic quality. In this session we will focus on the movement of the spine through rolling, creeping, crawling, standing and walking; experimenting with coming up off the floor as well as going down to the floor with ease and grace.
A seated meditation focusing on the spine/Central Channel using breath, imagery, and somatic awareness. We aim to tune in to the expansive space within to experience feeling centred, grounded and to cultivate a greater internal sense of self.
(This practice can be done seated on the floor, on a chair, or even lying if necessary)
The focus of Soma Dance is the Spinal Cord, where we will be playing with movements of the bottom section (with the pelvis), the middle section (with the rib-basket) and the top section (with the head), particularly sensing mobility and stability for spinal health. By extending, flexing and rotating we get to really feel this amazing structure within.
