What is Somatics?
Somatics is an approach to movement, that really requires you to start from a place of conscious awareness. While it may seem that the focus is on movement, really, the starting point is to gain an awareness of what is.
This means to build your awareness of proprioception (where you and all your body parts are in space) and interoception (how you sense all of those body parts, and your whole self, on the inside).
From that place, the movement becomes a journey of exploration and discovery. And this movement journey can provide you with more conscious awareness of your self, which can lead to greater ease, greater comfort, and greater freedom in your body.
We often know we want change (lose weight, gain weight, exercise more, get out of pain, gain more strength…) and we often go about it by focusing on the thing we want (the thing we feel we haven’t got) and ‘trying to make it happen’ by keeping our awareness externally focused, which can often cause discomfort, or frustration or disatisfaction. And then we lose heart, we lose motivation and ultimately we lose hope of being able to change.
With a somatic approach, the starting point is NOW.
What am I feeling NOW. What am I sensing NOW. What am I noticing NOW. And with that awareness we explore the next step: what is possible from here. Where and how can my body move comfortably and easily. What is available for me from here. What can I do slightly differently, what happens if I choose a different route way….
By bringing conscious awareness to what is, with playful curiosity and openness, we explore what is possible, and change begins. And then we can find ourselves in a new NOW with a whole new set of different possibilities before us.
Taking the focus inwards rather than always looking outwards provides you with your own pathway to where you want to go. It may not always feel like the fastest and the quickest route, but it is usually the most effective and efficient way in the long term, and it CAN be done without push or force or strain.

I love how this work has been built from the bottom up, as it were, stacked layer on layer. As ever, the subtlest adjustments can make such a huge difference. Thank you for all the detailed, exquisite guidance and check ins. I’ll be releasing from the centre, going out …
New learnings are indeed taking place, and it’s nice to notice how the practice helps me grow in body/soma awareness, and how that informs more comfort and ease in movement.
Thanks so much for this. I have just completed it and it felt amazing… When I stood at the end it felt so different so much more balanced front and back and my shoulder girdle felt completely different. I love this work, thank you so much! What a find you have been xxx
