Building on our previous discussion about neuroscience and the network-based framework superceding the triune brain model , here we’ll be introducing specific brain networks that play important roles in somatic learning. These networks, formed by interconnected brain regions, facilitate a range of functions from basic sensory processing to the development of complex cognitive and emotional experiences. Understanding these networks can enhance our comprehension of somatic learning, revealing how our bodies and minds interact in dynamic, integrated ways.
The Default Mode Network (DMN)
The Default Mode Network (DMN) is one of the more widely-known brain networks. It is active during restful states when the brain is not focused on the external environment. This network is involved in self-referential thoughts, such as daydreaming, introspection, and recalling memories.
– Contribution to Somatic Learning: The DMN helps in reflecting on past experiences and integrating valuable learnings from them into our sense of self. This introspection aids in understanding bodily sensations and emotional responses, contributing to a deeper awareness of our current somatic state.
The Salience Network (SN)
The Salience Network detects and filters salient stimuli from the environment and within the body, deciding what deserves our attention. It involves regions such as the anterior insula and anterior cingulate cortex.

– Cognitive Processes: Utilising the CEN in planning and engaging in somatic experiences ensures that these experiences are intentional and effective.
– Somatic Awareness: Activities that engage the Sensorimotor Network in developing enhanced organisation and sensory-motor integration.
– Emotional Coordination: Practices that involve the Affective Network, such as breathwork or guided imagery, designed to help in developing and harmonising emotional responses and their bodily manifestations.
As you may begin to observe these major brain networks play pivotal roles in not only somatic learning, but also day to day life, by supporting various aspects of our cognitive, emotional, and bodily experiences. By understanding and recognising how we can engage these networks, we can adjust and enhance our experiences, leading to more profound, integrated and coherent whole-being developments.
