It’s remarkable how many us can carry tension in our shoulders without even realising it. Day in and day out, we move through life, often unaware of the slow build-up of tightness and strain that accumulates in our bodies. The shoulders, in particular, seem to bear the brunt of it—whether from sitting at a desk, leaning forward to check our phones, or simply bracing ourselves against the pressures of life.

But what if this tension wasn’t something we had to live with? What if there was a way to gently, yet profoundly, release it and rediscover freedom in our movement?

That’s where Somatics can come into play.

Understanding Shoulder Tension

The shoulders are unique in that they have a wide range of movement compared to other parts of the body. This mobility, however, comes at a cost. Unlike the hips, which are more stable due to their location and the way there structured, the shoulders rely on patterns of muscle coordination to function optimally. When this coordination is distorted—whether due to posture, injuries, or long-standing habits—the musculature around the shoulders can become overly contracted , limiting their range of motion and creating discomfort.

Many of us unconsciously develop shoulder tension by rounding our shoulders forward, allowing our head to jut out, and holding tension through the chest and upper back. This posture often a result of contraction of muscles through the front of the body becomes so familiar that we might not even realise it’s happening. Over time, this can lead to a cycle where tension becomes a default state, creating a deeper sense of disconnection from our natural movement potential.

Using Somatics For Moving Beyond Tension

The beauty of Somatic practices lies in their ability to break this cycle—not through force or manipulation, but by reawakening our awareness of how the body is truely capable of moving. Rather than pushing or pulling the body into an idealised position, Somatic learning encourages us to explore gentle, focused movements that allow the brain and nervous system to release long-held patterns of tension.

It’s not about correcting posture or forcing a change into an externally prescribed state of correctness. Instead, Somatics invites us to notice how we’re currently holding ourselves and to make subtle, organic adjustments that naturally lead to greater ease. By focusing on the internal experience of our actions—rather than the external form—we begin to unravel the layers of tightness that have built up over time.

Through these simple, yet profound, explorations, we begin to feel the difference between tension and release. We start to understand how our shoulders, neck, and upper body are interconnected and how changes in one area can create a ripple effect throughout the whole system.

Why Subtle Movement is the Key

You might wonder, how can something as subtle as Somatic movements make such a big difference? The answer lies in how the brain communicates with the muscles. Our bodies are incredibly adaptable, and over time, they can develop habitual patterns of holding and movement that we may no longer be consciously aware of. Somatics helps to update the brain and nervous system as to what is actually occuring, providing  them with the means to develop more efficient, more effective ways of organising and mobilising the musculature.

In the case of shoulder tension, this might mean gently exploring how your shoulders relate to your ribs and your abdomen or noticing the connection between your shoulder blades and your spine. By slowing down and paying attention to these relationships, you allow your brain to receive more detailed information about what is actually occuring. Which very often leads to the automativ releasing tension that you didn’t previously know you’d been holdings onto.

This process of education – enhancing awareness and developing new behaviours –  is about developing a deeper sense of awareness and connection to your  body. A connectedness which itself translate into greater fluidity and ease in your everyday movements. Progressively through time, these subtle changes leading to profound transformations.

Beyond the Shoulders: An Integrated Approach

It’s important to remember that your shoulders don’t exist in isolation. The way you move your shoulders is influenced by the rest of your body, particularly your spine, ribs, and pelvis and the musculature that is connected to them. When we approach shoulder tension from a Somatic perspective, we don’t just focus on the one area – the shoulders. Instead, we look at how the shoulders move in relation to everything else – as part of a whole-body system.

This integrated approach is one of the reasons Somatics is so effective. By addressing the relationships between different parts of the body, you’re able to create lasting change, not just in how your shoulders feel but in how your entire body moves. You are addressing yourself as an integrated whole. Taking this approach enhancing shoulder movement becomes much more about bringing everything into harmonious relationship—so that your movements feel effortless and easy, rather than strained and/or forced.

Embodying Freedom in Everyday Life

One of the most beautiful aspects of Somatics is how it can transform not just your physical experience but your emotional and mental state as well. As your shoulders become free, your chest and abdomen become more open and flexible, your head and neck more aligned, then you naturally begin to experience feeling more relaxed, more confident, and more at ease in your own skin.

This approach to wellbeing isn’t about fixing a problem—it’s about cultivating a deeper connection with yourself, learning to move through life with more grace and presence. As you learn to release excess tensions from your body you discover an incredible sense of emotional and mental lightness spontaneously accompanying it. This is because the weight you’d been ‘shouldering’—both literally and figuratively—is gradually released and new found freedom emerges.

From this perspective, somatic education offers you a way to not only move better but also to live better. Each time you choose to experience a Somatic movement process, you begin to move with a sense of liberation that feels effortless and easy, enabling you to engage with the world in a better centred, coordinated and authentic way.
