Some years ago, in an interview, I shared how I viewed the difference between body and soma as similar to the difference between a particle and a wave. The comparison between body and soma, & particles and waves, unfolds as a profound exploration of interconnectedness, transcending conventional boundaries of understanding. Yet, as we delve deeper into these concepts, we uncover not only their intrinsic symmetries but also their implications for the nature of animation and vitality.

The Dichotomy Explored: Body and Soma

The philosophical distinction between body and soma transcends mere physicality, delving into the essence of existence itself. The body represents the tangible vessel, the corporeal form bound by three-dimensional spatial coordinates. It embodies the material structure, the anatomical composition that can be viewed when we see another in corporeal form.

Conversely, soma extends beyond the confines of the physical realm, encompassing the holistic essence of being. Drawing from ancient Greek philosophy, soma embodies consciousness, emotions, and spiritual dimensions, transcending the limitations of materiality to embrace the ethereal fabric of existence.

Parallels with Particles and Waves: A Journey through Spacetime

In the realm of physics, the duality between particles and waves mirrors the philosophical distinction between body and soma. Particles, with their discrete nature and localized presence, serve as the building blocks of matter, adhering to the laws of classical mechanics. Conversely, waves exhibit fluidity, propagation, and interconnectedness, spanning across space in a continuous manner.

As we delve deeper, we recognize the transition from three-dimensional spatial coordinates to the four-dimensional framework of spacetime. Just as particles and bodies exist within three-dimensional space, somas and waves extend their presence into the temporal dimension, shaping and resonating within the fabric of spacetime.

The Essence of Animation: Unveiling the Vital Spark

It is within this transition to four-dimensional perspectives that we uncover the essence of animation and vitality. While a body may remain inert and unmoving, a soma, by its very nature as a living process, is animated by a vital spark. This animating potency infuses life into the soma, propelling it through the tapestry of spacetime with purpose and vitality.

Just as waves ripple across the canvas of spacetime, propelled by the currents of existence, so too does the soma navigate the temporal currents of life, animated by the spark of vitality. In this light, we come to understand that while a body may be dead or unmoving, a soma continues to evolve and unfold, propelled by the animating spark that defines the essence of life itself.

Embracing Interconnectedness and Vitality

As I conclude our exploration of body and soma, particles and waves, I hope it has gone some way to give you an appreciation for the interconnectedness of existence. Through the lens of parallelism, we illuminate the dynamic interplay between physicality and vitality, transcending disciplinary boundaries to embrace the holistic nature of reality.

For me, this animating spark is the impulse to be. It is the initialising pulsation that radiates outwards into each of us. It is what gives rise to individualised life experiences as it guides and directs the unfolding of the living active process that each of us is experiencing our own experiences as, within and through. In recognising the animating spark that imbues the soma with life, we can deepen our understanding of vitality as a fundamental aspect of existence.

Through reading this post, I also hope you can begin to comprehend the distinction being made when I talk about a soma rather than a body in other information I share.
