How often do you really focus your awareness on your pelvic floor? For many of us, this area of our body is something we only become aware of when there’s a problem—discomfort, tension, or the elusive sense that something is “off.” But what if instead of seeing it as a source of potential issues, we approached this area with curiosity? What if it holds the key to a deeper, more expansive experience of movement, sensation, and connection?
When we focus into the floor of the pelvis is not just a group of muscles hidden deep within our body. It plays a crucial role in our overall sense of balance, posture, and movement. It’s also intimately tied to our breathing, our stability, and our emotional well-being. Yet, like many areas of our body, it can become neglected, overshadowed by habitual tensions and behaviours that restrict its potential.
What if you could awaken your pelvic floor—not through effort or strain, but through a gentle process of somatic exploration?
The Pelvic Floor as a Foundation
This area at the base of our pelvis is a foundational part of our body, both literally and figuratively. It supports our internal organs, helps maintain balance, and plays a key role in our posture and movement. But, over time, we can develop unconscious habits that cause the muscles in this area to tense, tighten, or weaken. These patterns can limit not only our physical movement but also our emotional and energetic flow.
We might hold tension in the pelvic area without even realising it—whether due to stress, posture, or the way we move. This tension can create a sense of disconnection, as though parts of our body aren’t quite communicating with one another as they should. The pelvic floor, when locked into these patterns, can create restrictions that affect how we walk, breathe, and even how we express ourselves.
Expanding Your Range of Possibilities
Imagine if instead of simply “coping” with the sensations in your pelvic area, you could open up a new range of possibilities by engaging your body in a different way. Rather than seeing discomfort or tension as something wrong, you could view it as an opportunity to explore, learn, and expand. The discomfort being a signal from your body that something needs to be changed to bring you into a better organised state of being. Approaching your body with a sense of curiosity and wonder.
When we approach the pelvic floor with this sense of curiosity, we can begin to discover its greater potential for movement, flexibility, and ease. Our pelvis isn’t all about stability—it’s also about fluidity. The way we sit, stand, and move affects not only the base muscles in our pelvis but our whole body. By exploring new ways of moving and breathing, we can unlock a more vibrant connection between our pelvis and the rest of our body.
This is where a somatic approach becomes so transformative. Somatics invites you to tune into your body’s inner signals, allowing you to reawaken parts of yourself that have perhaps been dormant or neglected. The pelvic floor, as a vital part of this whole-body system, benefits from this mindful attention. It starts to respond to your curiosity, opening up to new patterns of movement and sensation.
The Breath-Pelvis Connection
One of the most powerful ways to reconnect with this area is through breath as we discover the linkage between our pelvis and our diaphragm. Every breath you take gently moves these muscles, even if you’re not aware of it. When we begin to explore the breath in a somatic way, we’re not just focusing on breathing techniques—we’re becoming aware of the natural rhythm between our breath and our pelvis.
As the breath deepens, so does our connection to these areas. By allowing this connection to unfold organically, without forcing anything, we can experience a softening of tension and an expansion of movement. We learn to breathe not just into our chest or belly but to let the breath flow through the entire body, reaching into the pelvis and awakening it in the process.
A Journey of Rediscovery
Engaging with the pelvic floor in this way is less about “doing” and more about “being.” It’s not about forcing muscles to work harder or imposing rigid techniques on your body. Instead, it’s about tuning into the body’s natural intelligence and allowing the floor of your pelvis to move and respond with ease.
As you explore new sensations and movements, you begin to notice shifts not only in your body but in your sense of self. You may feel more grounded, more at ease, and more open to experiencing life fully. The musculature forming the floor of your pelvis becoming more activated and engaged as a dynamic part of your being, one that supports you physically, emotionally, and energetically.
Opening Up to New Possibilities
If you’ve been curious about how to reconnect with your body and explore the deeper layers of your being, there’s a gentle, accessible way to do so. By bringing awareness to this area of your body through somatic practices, you can begin to open up new possibilities for movement, sensation, and connection.
If you’re interested in going deeper into this journey, I invite you to explore the Awaken Your Pelvic Floor course. It offers a series of video lessons designed to help you gently awaken, breathe, and move with more freedom. Through sensing, meditating, and breathing, you’ll discover how to integrate the floor of your pelvis into your whole-body experience.
