Using Organic Precision: Embracing the Dynamic Nature of Human Be-ing.
In many fields, from somatics to breathwork, the language we use profoundly shapes how we understand and approach our bodies and our development. A common approach has been to seek “mechanical correctness”—a concept borrowed from the world of machines, where precision is defined by strict adherence to specific, predetermined rules. However, when we apply this concept to human beings, it can limit our understanding of how we function and grow. Instead, here I propose embracing the idea of “organic precision,” a concept that honours the complexity, adaptability, and dynamic nature of our bodies and minds.
The Limitation of Mechanical Correctness
Mechanical correctness suggests that there is a single “correct” way to perform an action or process, akin to how a machine operates. Machines are designed to execute tasks with consistent accuracy, following precise, unchanging instructions. While this approach works well for engineered systems, it falls short when applied to human beings. Our bodies are not machines; they are living, evolving systems that respond to a vast array of internal and external stimuli.
In somatics, for instance, mechanical correctness might lead someone to believe that there is only one right way to breathe, move, or position their body. This belief can create rigidity, both physically and mentally, as individuals strive to meet an external standard that may not align with their unique, dynamic needs. It can also lead to a narrow focus on specific patterns, reducing the engagement of the whole body and the full spectrum of possibilities available to us.
The Concept of Organic Precision
Organic precision, by contrast, recognises that human activity is not about conforming to a fixed set of rules. Instead, it’s about finely tuning our actions and responses in a way that aligns with our natural rhythms, variability, and the specific context in which we find ourselves. This approach values adaptability and responsiveness, understanding that what is precise and effective in one situation may not be so in another.
When we talk about breathwork, for example, organic precision means being aware of and responding to the subtle changes in our body as we breathe. It’s not just about following a predetermined pattern, but about engaging with our breath in a way that feels right for us in the moment. This could mean adjusting the depth, pace, or location of our breathing based on what we sense in our bodies. In this way, we are not just doing breathwork; we are experiencing it as a living, evolving process.
Integrating Organic Precision into Somatic Learning
My experience in teaching pranayama has shown me the limitations of a purely mechanical approach. Over time, I noticed that while my ability to perform specific breathing techniques improved, my overall connection to my body began to narrow. I became adept at specific patterns, but I was engaging only a limited range of my body’s potential. For instance, despite being able to perform Kapalbhati with ease, I realised that my upper abdominal muscles were not as connected as they could be. My well-practised behaviours were automatically engaging the same pathways, without allowing for the exploration of new possibilities.
Through somatic explorations, I began to appreciate the value of organic precision. This approach encouraged me to move beyond repetitive patterns and introduce more variability into my practice. By changing the speed, intensity, and focus of my breathing, I could access a broader range of sensations and engage more of my body’s musculature. This not only enhanced my physical abilities but also deepened my awareness of my body’s potential.
In this context, organic precision isn’t about achieving a specific outcome or following a correct pattern. It’s about staying attuned to your body’s sensory signals and responding in a way that is precise for the moment. This might mean slowing down, adjusting the angle of a movement, or shifting the focus of awareness to different parts of the body. By doing so, we create a more holistic, integrated experience that respects your own body’s unique nature.
Embracing Flexibility and Playfulness
One of the key insights I personally have gained from integrating organic precision into my practice is the importance of flexibility and playfulness. When I stopped trying to fit my breathing and movements into a rigid framework and instead began explore the greater range of possibilities available to me, I opened myself up to new experiences and deeper levels of awareness that didn’t exist when I did things rigidly. This new found flexibility I discovered allowed me to begin to fluidly adjust to different situations and life experiences, which lead to much more ease and fun
In the end, organic precision offers a much more empowering and effective approach to personal development. It encourages us to honour the dynamic nature of our bodies and minds, embracing the variability and adaptability that are inherent in being human. By focusing on organic precision rather than mechanical correctness, we can create a more fulfilling, expansive, and integrated experience of ourselves.
