Breathing is one of the most intimate acts of life. It’s something we do without thinking, a constant companion through every experience. Yet, when we take a moment to reflect on our breath, we may realise that much of it isn’t fully ours. Our breath, the very essence of life moving through us, has been shaped, patterned, and influenced by others in ways we rarely recognise.
Think about it—how often have we unconsciously mirrored the breathing patterns of those around us? From the moment we are born, we breathe in sync with our parents, taking on their rhythms and flows. As children, we watch and model ourselves after others, sometimes even our heroes, those we admired or aspired to be. Each layer of socialisation adds another filter to our breathing, aligning us with the world but pulling us further away from our authentic Self.
Over time, these patterns of ‘otherness’ settle into our being. We breathe the way our parents did, the way our peers did, the way society tells us is acceptable. In the process, the natural, unbounded flow of breath—our true connection to the life force within—becomes restricted. It’s as if the breath, once expansive and free, is now shaped to fit the contours of external expectations and influences, diminishing the pure essence of our own breathing in favour of the breathing of others.
The Layers of Otherness in Our Breath
We carry so many stories in our breath. There’s the gentle influence of parental imprinting, where we adopt their pace, their depth, their way of responding to life through breath. These patterns become deeply embedded, often without our awareness. Then, as we grow, we imitate the breathing patterns of people we admire. Maybe it was the cool, calm collected breath of a hero, or the hurried breath of someone always on the go, always achieving. These patterns can become woven into our own breathing, layering over our inherent rhythm.
Even in social settings, as we build rapport with others, our breath unconsciously syncs with theirs. We breathe with our friends, our colleagues, our communities, subtly adjusting our patterns to fit in, to feel connected. Each adjustment brings us closer to others but, at the same time, further away from the deep, authentic breathing that is uniquely ours.
It’s fascinating to notice how these external patterns shape our internal experience of breath. The breath becomes a reflection of the world outside, a mirror of the otherness we’ve absorbed, rather than an expression of the inner Self we carry within. This ‘other-breathing’ can leave us feeling disconnected from our core, as if the natural flow of our being is stifled, reduced to a shallow echo of who we truly are.
Somatic Breathing: Returning to the Breath of Self
This is where Breathing Somatically invites a profound shift. Rather than continuing to breathe as others do, Somatic Breath explorations offer you the opportunity to breathe yourself back into harmony with your inner Self. It’s not about applying a technique or following a prescribed pattern but allowing your breath to naturally align with the truth of who you are, here and now.
When I engage with Somatic Breathing, I feel a gentle invitation to release those layers of otherness. Each breath becomes a conscious return to my authentic way of being. It’s as though Source is whispering, “Breathe as I intended you to breathe, in unison with your own essence.” And with each inhale, I can feel the weight of the external patterns loosening, dissolving, fading away. With each exhale, I sense the emergence of my own inner rhythm—one that is uniquely mine, one that flows in perfect harmony with who I am in this moment.
Somatic Breathing isn’t about forcing the breath or manipulating it into a certain form. It’s about relaxing into the natural currents of your own being, allowing the breath to flow as Source directs—lovingly, easily, blissfully. It’s an exquisite return to Self, a quiet but powerful act of reclaiming your breath from the influence of others and aligning it with the deeper currents of your inner world.
Breathing in Ease, Breathing in Elegance
As I deepen my own experience of Somatic Breathing, I discover that my breath no longer feels borrowed or shaped by the outside world. It becomes a direct expression of my inner Self. There is an elegance to this, a sense of breathing in easiness, breathing out elegance. The breath flows effortlessly, naturally, as if it has always known the way back to this place of alignment.
In this space, the breath becomes a living expression of Source. It moves not out of habit or unconscious imitation but from a place of pure creation. Each breath is a new experience, a new moment of life, breathed from within. There’s no need to control it, no need to mould it to fit anyone else’s pattern. The breath, when aligned with Source, is perfect just as it is—blissful, free, expansive.
When we allow ourselves to breathe in this way, something extraordinary happens. We begin to feel a deeper sense of connection to our own essence. We start to experience the ease that comes from being fully present with our breath, fully alive in our body. This ease flows not just through the breath but throughout our entire being, creating a sense of harmony and wholeness that permeates everything we do.
The Gift of Authentic Breathing
Somatic Breathing is an invitation to come home to your own breath, to feel the aliveness that pulses through you when you breathe not as others breathe but as you are meant to breathe. It’s a return to being your Authentic Self, a reconnection with the deeper rhythms that are uniquely yours.
This process is not about striving or achieving; it’s about relaxing into the natural ease of your own being. It’s about breathing yourself back into alignment, letting the breath flow from the core of who you are, free from the imprints of others. As you do this, you’ll find that the breath becomes a source of nourishment, a source of joy, and a source of effortless presence.
So, take a moment. Pause. Breathe. Let go of the patterns you’ve absorbed from the world around you, and allow your breath to guide you back to your centre. In this simple, profound act of breathing, you’ll discover a depth of ease, a sense of excellence that flows effortlessly from within. You’ll find that, in breathing as Source intended, you are breathing life itself, in its purest, most beautiful form.
