In our daily life, one thing that often goes unnoticed is our breath. Throughout our experiences breathing is omni-present and because of this it is largely in the background of our awareness enabling other things take centre stage. It’s such a pervasive aspect of our experience it’s importance can evade us.
A notion that came to mind as I was writing this is that for many it’s ‘The Elusive Obvious‘. a phrase coined by Moshe Feldenkrais for the title of one his books.
The breath is a secret, hidden in plain sight.
So, when we begin to look closer we discover that beyond its basic role in sustaining our physical bodies, the act of breathing holds a deeper significance – it is a conduit for transformation, a gateway to enhancement of our life experiences, a partner to our development.
At its core, breathing is a simple yet intricate process, a dance between inhales and exhales. Yet within this simplicity lies a vast realm of possibilities. When we focus in on breathing we can also begin to recognise that it’s not just a physiological function. Our breath is also an expression of our overall state of being – our emotions, thoughts, and energy levels. It’s a statement we make, before we open our mouths to speak. Through conscious awareness and intentional actions, we can tap into the power of our breath in order to change the states we have access to.
For me, developing flexibility in breathing is a key component in developing my ability to adapt and thrive in an evolving world of experiences. By cultivating awareness of my own breath and learning new ways of modulating my own breathing patterns, I gain the capacity to shift my internal state, to find calm amidst activity, and to even summon additional energy when required. Developing my own breathing capacities and capabilities has become a means whereby I can enjoy developing a life filled with greater ease, grace and satisfaction
By embracing the fluidity emerging in my own breath capabilities, I open myself to the possibility of greater development in all areas of my being. Each inhale carries the potential for new beginnings, while each exhale offers the opportunity to alternatively experience new endings. In this continuous cycle of expansion and contraction, I can experience the essence of human transformation – the experience of my own essential self emerging through self-exploration, self-discovery and self-realization all fueled by the breath of life within and all around me.
And so it is within the quiet spaces between thoughts, in the gentle rise and fall of a chest, there exists a world of infinite possibilities ready to be accessed and experienced.
I invite you now to pause, for a moment…….to honor the power of your own breath – to listen to its whispers, to feel its gentle rhythm, and to embrace the transformation that presents itself as you focus inward. For in the breath, we find the means to awaken our greater Self – a reminder that in the stillness, we discover the true essence of life within us.
