When asked if I teach somatic experiencing, I’ve previously directed people to other online and offline resources. However, my personal exploration of Somatics has led me to a realisation: the essence of ‘experiencing my own soma’ transcends mere labels and definitions.

At its core, ‘somatic experiencing‘ is simply the unfolding of a lived somatic experience over time, encompassing every sensation, emotion, and movement within a body-mind system. It’s a journey of self-discovery and development, unrestricted by frameworks or methodologies.

While Dr. Peter Levine’s work on “Somatic Experiencing” focuses on healing trauma through mindful awareness of bodily sensations, it’s crucial to understand that his approach is just one facet of somatic experiencing. By recognising this, we can embrace a broader understanding of somatics and its transformative potential.

What’s truly empowering is realising that somatic experiencing isn’t limited to therapeutic sessions; it can be integrated into mindful movement practices or everyday moments of presence. This freedom of approach allows for lifelong growth and self-realisation beyond addressing past traumas.

Distinguishing between somatic experiencing as a generic term and Peter Levine’s therapeutic approach reminds us of the richness and diversity within this field. By embracing the essence of somatic experiencing beyond rigid definitions, we unlock its infinite potential for personal growth and transformation.

In the future, if asked about teaching somatic experiencing, I’ll emphasise its role in helping individuals connect with their present somatic experience, offering a gateway to embodied existence and self-awareness.
